In Kindergarten through fifth grade I wore those (late sixties). Other girls had Mary Janes (buckle shoes) and yet I was told to wear Saddleshoes because they lasted much longer. They had real good stitching and were genuine leather (better for the feet than other shoes). My parents purchased me a new pair every fall and they'd be a little big so my feet could grow into them.
