Actually, I have vague, murky memories of reading Piers Anthony's "But What of Earth" in my early teens and I believe it had a sort of built-in director's cut via a crazy number of footnotes and appendices. But I also remember that reading it was awkward at best.

I guess when you get published as much as Mr. Anthony, you can break the fourth wall as much as you like. :)
